Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints. This inflammation results in swelling, pain, stiffness, and limited movement. There are over one hundred different types of arthritis. Arthritis is caused by the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects the joint, allowing for smooth movement. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint. Without the usual amount of cartilage the bones rub together causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Treatment varies depending on the particular case, which joints are affected, severity, and how the condition affects daily activity. Arthritis is not necessarily curable; treatment aims at reducing your pain and discomfort. Making lifestyle changes without medication is preferable for osteoarthritis and other forms of joint inflammation. Exercise for arthritis is necessary to maintain healthy joints, relieve stiffness, reduce pain, and improve muscle and bone strength. It is important to work with a physical therapist to design an individualized program which should include: low impact aerobic activity, range of motion exercises for flexibility, and strength training for muscle tone.
