Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a common condition characterized by long-term body-wide pain and tender points in muscles, tendons, joints, and other soft tissue. Fibromyalgia has been linked to fatigue, insomnia, headaches, numbness in feet and hands, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its own or along with other musculoskeletal conditions such as lupus. This condition can mimic the pain that occurs with various types of arthritis. The soft-tissue pain is described as deep-aching, shooting, burning and ranges from mild to severe. For some patients pain improves during the day and increases again during the evening. Pain can increase with activity, cold weather, and stress.
In mild cases, symptoms may go away when stress is decreased or lifestyle changes are implemented. Medications, patient education, physical therapy and counseling are recommended for treatment. Certain classes of antidepressants in low doses can relax skeletal muscles, improve sleep quality, and release pain-killing endorphins. Other medications that can be used include anti-inflammatory pain medications. Lifestyle changes including eating a well-balanced diet and avoiding caffeine, along with daily exercise can be effective in treating fibromyalgia.
